This puzzle is ancient with many people saying it’s over 2000 years old. The Chinese rings puzzle is one of those recreational mathematical problems known for several centuries in the West as well as in Asia. Its origin is difficult to ascertain but is most likely not Chinese.

The puzzle consists of a long loop with a handle on one end that is interlocked with nine rings. The objective is to disentangle the long loop from all nine rings, and the solution takes 341 moves.

To complete the Chinese Ring puzzle (9 linked rings puzzle) you must have lot’s of patience, which is why it is also known as the patience puzzle.

Known around the world as the Chinese Ring puzzle, or just the Chinese Rings, here are the many other names for it.

In China it’s other name is Jiulianhuan but over the years it’s also been know as Nine Linked Rings, The Linked Rings, Chinese Folk Rings, and Devil’s Needle.

The French call it Baguenaudier. In Italy it’s known as Anelli di Cardano or Cardano’s Rings.

German call it Zankeisen (quarrel iron) or Nürnberger Tand.

Russian call the puzzle meleda.

This puzzle has certainly been around for a long time and is definitely worth a try.
